Magazine Advertisement

One of the most gratifying feelings is when you choose to attend an event or function based on an advertisement, and when you show up it is exactly how it was depicted by the ad. That is what I aimed to accomplish in this project. I chose a photograph taken at the Sawdust Festival to use as my main point of focus because it puts you at the festival: catching sun rays beneath the trees, looking at trinkets and masterpieces as far as the eye can see, etc. It displays the amount of crafts and activities that can be found in only one viewpoint. It lets the viewer submerge himself in the scene, surrounding themselves with booths and kiosks all the same. I chose the red type to match that of the Sawdust logo, which would be seen everywhere throughout the festival. It also gives the ad a sense of celebration, which is highlighted by the stars on either side. Rather than a black background, I chose an earthy grey instead, representing the raw materials that the artists use to create their masterpieces.

The list of activities, I believed, was the main selling point of the ad. That is why I have them all bolded, highlighted with red and white, and drawing the viewers eyes down and over to the rest of the ad. The description on the festival is important, but secondary to the activities (which is the real interest). It’s still in full view, but I did not highlight it to make it seem more formal and serious, as the artists take the festival. The Sawdust Art Festival is for everyone of all ages. I made my ad so it would catch your eye and interest, but also so it would appropriately display a day at Sawdust.
